ABOUT MICHELLE Michelle has had the good fortune to study with several spiritual organizations. A year after graduating from college, she lived for a year in an ashram in Atherton, California which was sponsored by Ananda, a spiritual community which follows the teachings of Paramahansa Yogananda, an Indian guru who came to America in 1920 to spread the teachings of kriya yoga. While living in the ashram, Michelle established her lifelong habit of meditating on a daily basis. In 1982, one of her roommates attended a meditation lecture at the Moscone Center in San Francisco, California. The lecturer was a certain Dr. Frederick Lenz (at that time he was named "Atmananda"). Noticing that her roommate's eyes had an intense luminosity that she had not perceived before, she asked if she could join her roommate at the next lecture. He agreed and before she knew it, she was accepted as one of Atmananda's students. She studied with Atmananda/Rama for about 12 years in various locations on the East and West coasts. During that time, she struggled through computer school and eventually became a database consultant, which is her current occupation. While in Chicago, Michelle felt a need to slow down and get back to spiritual basics. She began studying at the Temple of Kriya Yoga and became certified as a hatha yoga instructor in the fall of 1996. In the fall of 1998, she earned the title of "Swami Kalyanananda" after completing two years of study in the temple's seminary program. Michelle currently teaches two hatha yoga classes a week, one at the Temple of Kriya Yoga and one at the Aids Alternative Health Project (AAHP) for HIV/AIDS patients. She is also a Temple Musician and plays guitar at the temple's Sunday Satsangs.
